Und dann begann eine neue Zeitrechnung. In nur zwei Minuten deklassierte der schüchterne Junge die versammelten Skateboardprofis. Er stand einen Trick nach dem anderen – das Spektakuläre dabei: kaum einen davon hatte je ein Fahrer zuvor gesehen. Die einmalige Kür war das Ergebnis eines Missverständnisses. Der unerfahrene Mullen war davon ausgegangen, dass man nur mit neuen Tricks eine Chance auf einem Contest hatte – und hatte in seiner Garage deswegen verbissen an neuen Trick-Kreationen gearbeitet.
Durch Mullens Erfindung entstand das heutige “Streetskating”, bei dem Tricks an urbaner Architektur gemacht werden. Schnell entwickelte es sich zur dominanten Disziplin. Das Problem war: Mullen war kein Streetskater.

Im Moment hält sich China zurück und wartet ab, bis der nordkoreanische Diktator Kim Jong-il stirbt. Dessen Tod ist eine Frage der Zeit. Falls das Regime zerfallen sollte, muss man davon ausgehen, dass China aktiv wird.
Die chinesische Armee würde in Nordkorea einmarschieren und Teile des Landes besetzen. Vor allem würde sie alles daran setzen, die Kontrolle über die Nuklearwaffen zu übernehmen.

A friend of mine tips the bartender «before» arriving at the bar, and has a drink waiting for him when he arrives.
I would consider that to be an electronic form of payment that is hugely successful. As for using a phone to make payments, I just don’t think people were ready for it.
We’re much more focused on social than PayPal (ironically, given their name). The part of Venmo that is most exciting is Trust. Here’s how this works: I can authorize a friend or merchant I trust to just take money from me whenever they want. It’s like sharing a credit card with a family member or opening a tab at a bar.
And because you tend to only trust people that you actually trust in real life, illegitimate transactions don’t really happen anyway.

The boys in the film are the younger brothers of a good friend of mine who is a kind of drunken local archeologist. Americans do shots, so young Mexicans do the whole bottle. It’s a question of class, of coming out as sophisticated within this big mess that is the Mayan riviera.

A: Braucht die Stadt denn eine zusätzliche Identität? Zürich besitzt eine intakte historische Innenstadt, wovon viele deutsche Städte nur träumen können, sowie eine tolle Landschaft: der See, dieses Alpenpanorama. Das ist Identität.
Q: Ikonografische Architektur ist in Zürich also überflüssig?
A: Streng genommen: Ja. Die Stadt ist kein Bilbao, dem ein Museum von Frank O. Gehry frischen Wind einhauchen muss. Zürich braucht keine Autorenarchitektur, um eine Marke zu setzen.

A: Klubmässig in Zürich, weil Zürich der Entwicklung schlicht noch hinterherhinkt. In New York ist es schon vorbei. Dort geht kein Mensch mehr in Klubs.
Meine Mutter hat mir einmal einen Rat gegeben: «Schau zu, dass du nicht der Letzte bist, der nach Hause geht.» Ich sage: «Schau auch zu, dass du nicht die Letzte kennen lernst, die noch da ist.»
Bedeutung hat ein Abend, der so etwas ist wie ein wunderbarer Unfall, nach dem zwar alle havariert, aber auch glücklicher von dannen wanken.
Dann brauchen wir wieder ein intellektuelleres Publikum, Leute, die sich nicht einfach blindlings vergnügen wollen, sondern die Auseinandersetzung suchen. […] Raus mit allem dekorativen Firlefanz. Gute Musik, gute Leute und ein Kasten Bier, das funktioniert in jeder Garage.

Street wear used to be a tight knit community of people who really FELT the culture. We had something to say, we had philosophies about how clothes represented us, and we brought smart hip hop and fashion to the forefront. But, then big business saw what we were all doing and wanted to co-opt it.

The whole game was fucked because when you try to expand and bring your culture to new markets, you inevitably compromise your work because now you need to please them for their dollar (like ethnic restaurants catering to non-native eaters). That’s consumer power gone bad. Now you have aspects of street wear swallowed up into high fashion as well as low-end brands like H&M, Gap, etc. (like when fusion fine dining incorporates yuzu or red cooking) It seems normal now and some of the things we popularized have become staples. It sucks. We’re just another footnote.
