abschreckende Wirkung
The New Digital Cash
Cash and checks are inconvenient, and not everyone accepts credit cards.
A friend of mine tips the bartender «before» arriving at the bar, and has a drink waiting for him when he arrives.
I would consider that to be an electronic form of payment that is hugely successful. As for using a phone to make payments, I just don’t think people were ready for it.
We’re much more focused on social than PayPal (ironically, given their name). The part of Venmo that is most exciting is Trust. Here’s how this works: I can authorize a friend or merchant I trust to just take money from me whenever they want. It’s like sharing a credit card with a family member or opening a tab at a bar.
And because you tend to only trust people that you actually trust in real life, illegitimate transactions don’t really happen anyway.

I have never used Helvetica
In my whole career in typography, starting with my apprenticeship, I have never used Helvetica. Being a Swiss typographer, it’s always been Univers.
Vignelli said that Helvetica was a Modernist typeface – No! No! Helvetica is anything but Modernist, Clearly it has its roots in Akzidenz Grotesk and that was designed in 1899, which is Victorian as far as I am concerned. Akzidenz is a fantastic font but it’s not Modernist, it’s got a really antique feel about it, which again shows that Max Miedinger [Helvetica’s designer] didn’t have a clue about type design. He was the salesman at [foundry] Haas’sche Schriftgießerei for Christ’s sake.
People just use Helvetica because they have heard of it, it’s on everyone’s computer and everyone else uses it.
It’s very much like that, a bit like Julia Roberts – pretty enough but…
When people choose a typeface it’s not a rational decision, it’s completely emotional. They home in on details and say ‘I love that, that’s why I’m going to use it’. But then they want a rational explanation to tell their client. We’re hoping with this that people will react positively to it and that it can do everything that Helvetica isn’t doing … and in the process I get very very rich!

But honestly, when I’m painting SpongeBob, I’m not thinking, Oh, I loved this episode. Honestly, I’ve never even watched it.

Eagles of Africa

(The multimedia artist?) Cyprien Gaillard talks about his most recent work, Eagles of Africa, a film about nostalgia, modern day ruins and unexpected heroes. (with a modern man, a hero [… ] He is the musician Koudlam, a local hero “don” in Cancun, where he performed more than a 100 times last year.)
The boys in the film are the younger brothers of a good friend of mine who is a kind of drunken local archeologist. Americans do shots, so young Mexicans do the whole bottle. It’s a question of class, of coming out as sophisticated within this big mess that is the Mayan riviera.
[…] full of hope, like a new situation of equilibrium after global chaos: looking at a ruin and being a ruin yourself.

Autorenarchitektur
Q: Doch grosse, moderne Architektur sucht man in Zürich praktisch vergeblich. Weshalb?
Q: Ikonografische Architektur ist in Zürich also überflüssig?
A: Streng genommen: Ja.

Obviously Beth [Ditto] isn’t sample sized so I always custom-make everything for her. […] I’m dying for someone to come and film in Beth’s closet. There is so much Jeremy Scott in there, there’s stuff she hasn’t even WORN yet! I’m her own personal Rumplestiltskin, sewing away all night to make her outfits!

press the same buttons
[…] vinyl is dead; it’s dead. It’s gonna be a special item for collectors, and probably will exist forever in that way, but that’s it. It’s over.
I’m not one of these younger kids who want everything for free. I go to Beatport, and I even go to CD stores and buy CDs still. It’s a mixture and a balance, but I’m aware that all the young kids just get everything for free. They don’t give a shit.
You need a good a team, the knowledge of how to use the Internet and a good distributor. If you have that, it doesn’t make sense to give it to another label, because you give away your rights, almost half the money, and they just press the same buttons.
But sometimes when you’re in Asia where the culture’s not so defined as in parts of Europe, they don’t have a clue anyway, but that doesn’t happen too often.
Ich bin nicht bescheiden.
Bescheiden?

Because before that, there were no DJs carrying their own bags of records—the clubs used to hire DJs, but the vinyl belonged to the club.
I don’t have any plan at all.
I kind of want to be in the middle of the majority and the minority. I don’t really want people to know what I am.
If there’s a really good thing going on now and I don’t know about it, I think that’s kind of right. If I know what’s going on, then it’s not truly new, if you know what I mean.
I’m not really an art collector—I’m more of a person who picks up things. I have pieces by people like Richter, for example, but then also others by unknown Japanese artists, and not many real art collectors do that.
I mean, I copy many things—almost everything I do could be called a copy in some way. But I copy with a certain respect.

Pornography drains so much human energy and attention that it has the means and mission to evolve very quickly and adapt to very subtle evolutions of our collective mind. It is like organized crime for economics. It goes everywhere legit business goes but ten years sooner!
